Ümmet Karaca

Ümmet Karaca, born in Georgia in 1956, developed an early interest in art and gradually carried his practice into a professional sphere. He began to attract attention in art circles with his first solo exhibition held in Tbilisi in 1987. In 1993, he presented his first solo exhibition in Turkey at Varol Art Gallery in Istanbul, bringing his artistic practice into an international context. Following this, he held numerous solo exhibitions in cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, while also participating in many group exhibitions.

Working primarily with oil on canvas, the artist focuses largely on the theme of Istanbul. In his works, he interprets the city’s streets, people, nature, and social life through a classical approach. The landscapes of Büyükada hold a particularly significant place in his production. While he is best known for his urban landscapes, he also produces still lifes and portraits.

Currently living in Istanbul, Ümmet Karaca continues his artistic practice actively.

For Ümmet Karaca, painting is not merely a visual form of expression, but also a means of understanding the city he lives in, feeling its rhythm, and leaving a trace against time. By approaching the ordinary moments of Istanbul’s daily life through a classical aesthetic, he aims to offer the viewer an atmosphere that is both familiar and timeless.
